Kelmarsh Country Fair

This event almost didn't happen due to some freak weather!! I looked out of my window at 7 o'clock on the Sunday morning, and snow was coming down like dinner plates!! Surely they're gonna call this one off Maralyn and I  thought, but after conferring with Glynne, Paul Dickie and Marvin Moore, it was decided we should make the effort, and so we all braved the icy, slippery roads and made our way there.

It was a little touch and go with all the fresh snow on the roads so early in the morning, and progress was slow and cautious, bu eventually we all arrived safely, including Marvin, who had been up to Holdenby to collect Mia, his Bengal Eagle Owl.

We were alotted space in the tent where the Hawkboard's terry large would be hosting classes for youngsters to teach them about birds of prey. We had our story boards set up, which included several pictures of our history to date.

Several people stopped in for a chat as the weather improved, and the demonstrations finally got under way with Bryan Patterson and Terry Large hosting the Falconry arena. The classrooms for kids struggled a little for numbers, but the first of three was a good turn out, all the kids thoroughly enjoyinf being in the classroom with a European eagle Owl, and a Barn Owl, followed by flying two Harris hawks in the Falconry Arena.

By now, most of the snow had gone, and the arena events were well under way, with a brave crowd starting to congreagate. The birds all flew well, despite the weather conditions being far from ideal. The training kite was put up to around 300 feet or so, it would have been unfair to ask birds to climb higher on such a miserable day!

The time progressed, and the weather steadily got worse, and about 3 o'clock, the snow and wind set back in, and most people gave it up for the day. All said and done, NRC did well to attend this local event, and we thank the Hawkboard for their kind invitation to share their space! The vent was attended on Monday by Glynne, Kate, Joe as well as Julian Watson and family, Grant Dudley and John Elliott - a great turnout for the club. Hope to see some new volunteers for our up and coming events later in the year.
